Opening Statement

The onset of what we now call the modern world begins with the act of land-grabbing

And of the hijacking of spiritual power
And of systematic, industrial-scale genocide

KEY CONCEPTS

Terra nullius

The terms means “unoccupied territory”, or “nobody’s land”, or “land with no owner” in Latin, the language of ancient Rome.

Papal Bull

This is formal written order issued by the Pope in his official capacity. It may not seem so obvious today, but five hundred years ago, the Catholic Church was the world’s first imperial superpower.

Manifest destiny

Simply understood, this means a thing that is obvious, and whose occurrence in the future cannot be prevented. It was a phrase made up and then seized upon by European settlers to justify their rapid expansion from the eastern coast of what is now the United States , to eventually the west and far south.

The Commons

The idea of privately-owned land, or seabeds is a relatively new one to all human civilizations. The original normal was for a communal ownership of especially those areas that provided a use that benefited the community in common, hence the term: “The Commons”.

Eminent domain

This is the concept of how the established authority of the state –any state in force- has the final say in the use of land, or its allocation. In usual terms, this takes the form of the state making compulsory purchases or even seizures of land normally in the name of “Development”.

Monarchs, feudal and otherwise

Global movement against colonialism and the European imperial order were normally rooted in the left-leaning thinking that also opposed the ideas of monarchy and other forms of hereditary rule in which of course the European imperial order was founded.

Radical title

A problem here, is that European culture is rooted in the idea that only their civilization understood how to own land. As a result, concepts and practices of land ownership in most of those parts of the world that have experienced European domination, tend to be measured and understood from...

Indirect Rule

Much of British colonial Africa was governed through a network of local Africans who “bought in” to the colonial project. This took two main forms. One was to capture the Native those seats of native authority that could not be suppressed outright, and then re-fashion them to serve the colonial mission.

White man’s burden

This idea is among that family of ideas invented by imperial European intellectuals to explain the colonial project to others and justify it to themselves.

The Ramadhan Convention: A Gathering of Faith and Knowledge

During the Alwaasi Ramadhan Convention, we are honored to host a large Darasa (Islamic study session) featuring esteemed Islamic teachers and scholars. This remarkable event attracted over 1,500 attendees from all walks of life, creating an incredible atmosphere of learning, reflection, and spiritual growth. The convention provides a space for individuals to come together, foster unity, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Attendees leave the event feeling spiritually renewed, inspired to implement the lessons learned, and motivated to contribute positively to their communities.

Qurbani Activation: Sharing Joy and Blessings During Eid

In the blessed month of Dhul Hijjah, we carried out our annual Qurbani Activation as a way of celebrating Eid al-Adha with our communities. This noble charity initiative allowed us to spread the joy and blessings of Eid while fulfilling the Islamic obligation of Qurbani.

The Qurbani Activation brought smiles to countless families who were able to enjoy the festive celebrations with dignity and happiness. For many, this act of charity was not just a means to share meat but also a way to embody the spirit of Eid al-Adha—compassion, sacrifice, and gratitude.

SISU Orphanage Activation: Spreading Hope and Sustenance

As part of our commitment to supporting vulnerable communities, Alwaasi Charity organized the SISU Orphanage Activation to bring hope and sustenance to the children at the orphanage. This initiative aimed to provide essential resources that would support the orphanage throughout the New Year and the month of January.

The activation focused on delivering vital food supplies to ensure the children’s nutritional needs were met during this critical period. It was a heartfelt effort to start the year with positivity and support for those in need.

Sessions may involve various therapeutic techniques such as play therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, art therapy, and storytelling, all integrated with Islamic values and teachings.

Through a combination of empathy, active listening, and evidence-based practices, our counselors create a nurturing environment where children feel heard, understood, and supported.
